list of singles I picked from some 2012 free music samplers

Tonight after a reminder email from eMusic I started going through some samplers. These are usually free albums that labels put out there to get people to listen to their bands. It used to be you had to work for radio or a magazine to get them – not so any more. I use Amazon. I do a search for samplers, then I sort by date and then look for the free ones.

For my taste, some of the best are the Merge, Saddle Creek, Bar None, etc. Here are a few of the tracks I downloaded (or songs I had to download a free album to get to) from this batch. You don’t have to download the installer to download them.

Merge Spring 2011

2. The Party Line – Apex Manor
6. Civilian – Wye Oak
10. Please Ask for Help – Telekinesis
13. Clutching Stems – The Ladybug Transistor

Merge 2012

4. Heaven – Eleanor Friedberger
10. The First Time I Ran Away – M. Ward
12. Gone Tomorrow – Lambchop

Bar/None 2012

1. Maps – The Front Bottoms

Saddle Creek 2012

1. Generals – The Mynabirds
2. Babes – Icky Blossoms – give it a chance, it really kicks in about :45
7. Matador – Maria Taylor

Enemy Soil – This one I wouldn’t normally lile, but there is a cool song by a band called Dutch. The rest is pretty strong (ie sweary) rap. This song isn’t, I’m not sure why they’re on the label.

7. Just Before The Rain – Dutch

Bloodshot Records 2012

9. Out All Night – The Riptones – rockabilly country
12. 18 Wheels – Moonshine Willy – sounds like old Old 97’s

CD Baby Summer Mixtape 2012

1. I Won’t Cry – Monarques
2. Ambigamy – James and Evander
3. Taillights – D A W N S
6. You – With Lions

Hey Girl, Hey (Polyvinyl) Summer 2012 – Watch out for this one – it’s free for the album but $0.99 for each song. So download the whole thing, don’t pick individually from the website, like I did :-(.

2. The House That Heaven Built – Japandroids
4. Reptilians – Star****er
7. Letter Divine Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin
10. (Into the) Atmosphere Dusted

Best band name? The Front Bottoms. There are still more but it’s late: Sub Pop, others.
